Mentor Program

The Planned Giving Roundtable of Southeast Michigan offers a ten-month mentoring experience designed to support professionals who are building or expanding their expertise in planned and legacy giving.

Each year, a small cohort of participants is paired with an experienced planned giving professional who serves as a mentor and facilitator. Through monthly discussions and guided learning, participants explore the practical realities of philanthropic planning—from understanding gift vehicles to developing donor relationships and integrating planned giving into broader fundraising strategies.

The program provides a collaborative environment where participants can ask questions, share challenges, and learn from both their mentor and their peers.

What to Expect

  • Foundations of planned giving
  • Program structure and internal operations
  • Marketing and donor communications
  • Relationship-based fundraising
  • Financial and charitable planning concepts
  • Professional development and continuing education

Program Highlights

  • Small group format encouraging discussion and peer learning
  • Guidance from an experienced planned giving professional
  • Opportunity to build relationships with colleagues across the field

“The PGRT Mentor Program is wonderful! I expected an occasional meeting or phone call, but got so much more! The small group format allowed all to share questions and concerns in a room full of experts. In this rich and dynamic conversational space we were able to comfortably explore the main areas of planned giving, and address the nuances of specific topics depending on each of our organizations. In addition, my one-on-one conversations with my mentor allowed me to put into practice some of the bigger concepts, while having personal guidance along the way. It is truly a gift to have this kind of informative, professional support — I am so grateful for this program!”

“Serving as a mentor in the PGRTSEM Mentor Program has been one of the most rewarding professional experiences I’ve had in recent years. The conversations are thoughtful, practical, and grounded in the real challenges that fundraisers face every day. It’s energizing to work with professionals who are eager to deepen their understanding of planned giving and strengthen their work with donors. At the same time, the experience has reminded me how much we all continue to learn from one another in this field. The program creates a space for honest dialogue, shared insight, and meaningful professional connection.”
